Our Solution:
When investigating the garage door opener, we found a rusted chain with broken links, which was preventing the opener from lifting the garage door for more than about a foot off the ground. We fixed the problem by replacing the old chain with a new one and properly adjusting its tension level. We also checked that the travel limit switch hadn't moved from its correct position. Standard safety tests were then completed for precautionary measures and the garage door was as good as new.
